UPDATE: A total of four alumni joined the forum and two voted in the poll. The result was a "hung jury." (The forum and poll will expire a few days after the event.) -- Ed.

Jan 15, 2003 -- -- Revised 2/13/03 -- Last night's episode of CBS 48 Hours presented the story of a 1996 murder trial in which TCHS alumnus Mike Coghlan served as defense attorney. Our guess is that the defendant is grateful for Mike's TC education (among other talents).

TCHS Alumni News hosted a live interactive discussion in the Forums. Turnout for this our first such event was light, but the system proved equal to the task. If your alumni group is planning an event, why not invite distant friends to participate in a forum during the affair? Just ask the editor to set up the forum. (Allow one month for planning and publicity. We can also notify registered members by email.)

Here's the original article, with links below to CBS' original materials.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS... We have received word from CBS's 48 HOURS, that Mike Coghlan '57's famous "balcony case" is scheduled for presentation soon on the Friday evening program. The episode reports the trial of Robert Salazar, a man from Texas accused of throwing his co-worker over the balcony of the Industry Hills (CA) Sheraton Hotel back in 1996.

(2/12: Still on as far as we know. Join the forum; vote in the poll. 2/6: We've been informed that the "Mike Coghlan" episode will be aired February 12. In most cities the program appears at 10 PM, but check your local listings to be sure, because the 48 Hours schedule is often rearranged to reflect current events. --Ed.)

Mike Coghlan was part of the class of '57, the first to graduate from the Lemon Avenue campus. He has practiced law in Southern California since the mid-60s and is a Deputy Public Defender for the County of Los Angeles. He was assigned this case back in February or March of 2001, although many high profile cases are referred to private attorneys. Because the Salazars are practically bankrupt from defending the civil case back in Texas, Salazar qualified for the public defender, and so Mike was assigned the case from among over 800 public defenders in L.A. County. Because the "incident" happened at the Industry Hills Sheraton Hotel, that fell into the jurisdiction of the Pomona Superior Court. So Mike was selected from a pool of public defenders assigned to the Pomona Superior Court.

Following graduation from TCHS in 1957, Mike Coghlan attended Pomona College in Claremont, CA, graduating with a B.A. degree in English Literature in 1961. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Bibler (TCHS, '57), in January of 1961 and the two of them took off for two years in the Army Artillery at Fort Sill, OK from 1961 to 1963. Law School came next at Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco from 1963 to 1966.

From 1966 to 1971, Mike practiced law with the private law firm of Garvey, Ingram and Baker in Covina, CA. In 1971, he left the firm and opened his own law office in El Monte, CA, where he practiced domestic relations and criminal defense law for 20 years.

In 1991, he closed his law office in El Monte and went to work for the Los Angeles County Public Defender's office, where he remains employed. In 1995, Mike was assigned to felony trial work in the East District (Pomona) branch of the Los Angeles County Superior court and has been handling felony cases ever since.

Mike and Marilyn have resided in South Pasadena, CA since 1973. They have two sons (Timothy and Robert) and a golden retriever named Missie (aka Missie the Wonder Dog).

As CBS put it, airings are always subject to change, but as of today that is the date it will air. Check local listings for the time 48 Hours airs in your area or log onto 48hours@cbsnews.com as February 7th approaches. We'll post any changes we hear of in advance here at TCHS Alumni News.
