Passages: In memoriam

Susan Stayton Platfoot '65

Alan and Susan (Stayton) Platfoot.
Jun 10, 2003 -- Charlotte Johnson, '65, writes: It is with a sad heart that I share the news of our dear friend and classmate Susan Stayton Platfoot's passing on June 8, 2003.

Susan's Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 21, 2003 in the Christ Lutheran Church, 311 South Citrus Street, West Covina, CA.

Susan was an inspiration to all those she came in contact with. The book she wrote, entitled, Susan's Story, A Faith Journey, in which she shared her inspirational story about cancer and how it affected her and those around her raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research at The City of Hope.

To read more about Susan, visit her son's website. Susan was an almost daily inspiration to me (via e-mail) and she had a profound and positive influence on my life. I am grateful for the blessing of becoming close to Susan during the last few years. If it weren't for our both being members of our most wonderful class, The TCHS Class of 1965, I would not have received this blessing.

Susan's mother, Mrs. (Marie) Stayton, taught girls P.E. at Oak Avenue to both 7th and 8th grade girls. Susan and I often spoke of our class and what a special time it was growing up in Temple City during the fifties and sixties. Susan attended Emperor Elementary, Oak Avenue and TCHS.

Last October at our 60-64 reunion, Susan came bouncing up and buttonholed me, declaring that she was crashing the party, and that it was her second of the night. It seems her son David '83? and his class were having their reunion elsewhere on the Queen Mary the same evening. We had not met for forty years. In a typical time warp, she was at once herself and her mother. The Staytons lived across the street from me, and they had a profound effect on my life in ways I was happy to share with her during these past months. It's doubly difficult to have younger friends pass on. She was in fact, as Charlotte says, inspirational in her approach to her illness. Well played, Susan. You may have lost this battle, but based on our correspondence this year, I'd say you won the war.
