The Pride of Temple City - 2002. Current members will march in 2004 Rose Parade. |
TC's band is one of nine performing for the first time in the parade and the only high school band from California scheduled to appear. A total of 22 marching bands will participate.
The band's community sponsors have raised approximately $119,000 for the event, which has helped to buy instruments, supplementary instruction and transportation. (Help is still much appreciated, according to community sponsor John Flauro. You can contribute: Visit the band's site at the link below.)
TCHS Alumni News looks forward to presenting audio and video coverage of the Rose Parade shortly after the first of the year. (In addition to the official materials, we welcome photos and short video clips from onlookers; please contact the editor if you have sound or graphics to share. Kindly do not email unsolicited graphics.)
The TCHS band took its baby steps in the mid-1950s at what is now the Oak Avenue Intermediate School. Through periods of interest and apathy the band played on. In recent years new leadership and a dedicated body of community volunteers has developed The Pride into an institution respected by all who hear it. The band reached a low participation of only about 30 students around 20 years ago, but has surged to approximately 190 at present, helped by a strong preparatory program in the lower grades.
This event has been a long time coming. TC participated in the tournament in the early 20th Century with small floats. Talk of Rose Parade participation has been heard intermittently for over fifty years. TCHS Alumni News offers its congratulations to the Pride of Temple City.
