Update Your Directory Listing Today
Jul 03, 2004 --
A review of names and addresses in the Alumni Directory reveals some problems (a) with our system and (b) with the digital diligence of some of our beloved friends.
A few of you have made data entry errors that cause problems with some of the automated features. And our system is not able to correctly handle some of your names. So we're presenting some work-arounds to help us all.Contact DataThe major problem we've observed with email addresses is people putting in more than one, in the fashion (address1, address2). Our system cannot handle this. Please use only a single email address.Friends and the Life CyclePlease contact friends and invite them to register in the directory. Please do NOT register for them, as this can lead to misunderstanding when we eventually contact them.
If you know of a deceased classmate who is not registered, please send us that person's name and class affiliation. We will add the person to the directory and indicate permanently that he or she is deceased. The person's name will appear in a place of honor in the directory until the next registration occurs. If you see the name of a deceased friend in the directory, please let us know, providing appropriate contact information, by writing to the editor. We will follow up appropriately.
Name ConventionsWe begin with the premise of US (European) style names. These typically have the form First Middle (Maiden) Last. Provision is made in the registration forms for these components.
It is not necessary for married women to include their maiden name in the surname field; if this is done then the maiden name will appear twice. Women who use a dual surname should probably leave the maiden name field blank.
Hyphens in surnames are omitted by the system. This is done to preserve sort order, keeping all the Mary Smith Joneses (etc.) contiguous. Hyphenation is allowed in given names.
If your name includes prepositions or particles, they will be capitalized by the system, and the entire surname will be treated as a single string for purposes of sorting. If your name has embedded capitals or punctuation it must be corrected manually after registration is complete (the most common examples are Gaelic names like O'Donnell or MacDonald).
If your non-European name is traditionally presented in other than the normal US order, you must use the US order in order to preserve your normal place in the sorted directory.Corrections to DataOnce your name and contact data are in the system, you can easily make minor corrections.
We ask that you not add hyphens to surnames to preserve sort order. Other names and contact data can be corrected.
To sign into the directory, find your name in your class list and click the document icon that follows it. This will display your personal page. Paid members of the association may have a combination of picture(s) and text; others will see only their name and class year plus a comment. At the bottom of the page there is an Edit link. When it is clicked, the system will display a login form. If you do not have your password, or if this is the first time you have edited your directory data, you can click a Lost Password link, and the system will send you your password (If you have not received the password within one day, please write to the editor for further instructions).
The edit form is a straightforward presentation of the data in the directory. You can simple overwrite the current data or fill in any blanks. Please use standard spelling and DO NOT USE CAPITAL STRINGS, as they are considered rude on the Web. When you have altered the data to your satisfaction, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the form. Our PurposeWe present this information to further our primary goal: Communication. By keeping your information up to date, you help us to stay in touch and to bring you the news of TCHS you desire.
Please Note: The "rules" in the directory are just standard ways of handling data efficiently so that we can know who you are and send you information.. They are not philosophical treatises.
Finally, if you have not joined TCHS Alumni News Assn., please do so today. The small annual dues help us to pay the very real costs associated with maintaining this sophisticated site, which is designed to outlive us all if we support it.
