Your Email is on Its Way!
Mar 04, 2005 --
TCHS Alumni News announces the availability of web mail for all paid subscribers. Web mail service is now in final testing by a few hardy souls, and a general announcement will be sent to all registered members in early March.
FeaturesOur mail service has some very nice features.
- This is a "web mail" service. Retrieve your mail only over the web, so no mail client program is needed. Read your mail in your regular browser from anywhere in the world!
- Use the built-in personal calendar to manage your time. Access your calendar from anywhere; never be late again!
- You can read your mail from other sources that use POP mail. So if you have other email accounts you can centralize them here.
- Each mailbox offers web mail access and five megabytes of storage. Additional storage is available.
- Create an alternate identity and use to reduce spam.
- MOST IMPORTANT: TCHS Alumni web mail doesn't go away when you change ISPs, so you won't lose your alumni connection. It's a permanent address as long as you're a subscriber. Subscribe prepaid for ten years, and it's yours for life.
This the best way to stay in touch with your hometown friends and classmates.
BenefitWeb mail is a benefit of membership. There is no extra cost to subscribers for the basic mail service. Certain limitations apply; extensions are available. Bulk mailing is not allowed. Why using 'free email' is a BAD ideaIf you're using a "free" email account like H..mail or Y..oo! it's time to reconsider, because now your alumni association has a great alternative.
Here are several important reasons why you should avoid "free email" as assiduously as you avoid "free lunch."
- Free accounts are the Web equivalent of driving a Pacer. It doesn't help your image with savvy Internet users. It's also nearly impossible to get an email address that's memorable. Did you hear that, John389723874?
- Many online merchants will refuse to accept your order. Why? Too much fraud is associated with these free accounts; the vast majority, in fact. So some merchants simply refuse to accept orders that originate from them.
- You'll lose your account if you don't use it within a certain time. That may be OK if you use it only for casual, occasional contacts, but if you've used it to register at web sites, for example, or perhaps alumni associations, it could cause you to miss important messages. If there are problems with your account and your address is expired, you're out of luck.
(By the way... We lose about ten percent of our registrants every six months. Have you updated your email address in the directory lately?)
- Many free email providers charge extra for POP access to your mail. This extra charge is often more than what it costs to subscribe and get an email account from us for a year. Our accounts all come with POP and web mail access.*
- Most free email includes advertising insertions, either for the provider or for paid advertisers.
Dear Mary928759875, It's been great to renew our friendship. Buy Johnson's Night Grease Face Cream. Love, John389723874.
So, if you're relying on a free email account, it's time to reconsider. We recommend a robust, unique, personalized email account from your alumni association that affirms your membership and supports the alumni community.
* We cannot provide technical support for the POP program on your computer.
"Why not" list after Godaddy.com. We liked their Stupor Bowl commercial, and we stayed to like their advice.
