TCHS Teacher Publishes Geometry Book

Mark Howard, author and TCHS math teacher.
Nov 08, 2005 -- TCHS math teacher Mark Howard's supplemental geometry book, Student’s World, is unique because it revolves around students’ interests such as shopping, friends, cars—things students care about.

"Meaning increases learning," Howard stated. "Because the projects come from their lives, this motivates them, and the math concepts are a tool to display themselves and their creativity. The activities are varied like writing, creating posters, doing research, oral presentations, etc."

Mark developed an eight-page proposal that he originally sent to 40 publishers. The proposal included a query letter, market analysis, four-color book cover, table of contents, twenty proposed projects organized by title and content and one fully-written project.

"Believe me, this process is a lot of hard work!" he declared.

Within a month he was contacted by four publishers and ultimately selected W. K. Bradford Publishing Company. In August, 2004, he received a contract to write the book.

"This was a thrill because this has been a personal and professional dream of mine for years," Howard said.

Over the ensuing six months he wrote the book and then worked with an editor via email for several months more. With a background in graphics, Mark also made a significant contribution to the design of the book. The content and design was finalized and the book hit the W. K. Bradford Publishing Company website in August 2005. Currently, the publisher is finalizing their catalog for mailing and making changes to their website to highlight Student’s World.

Mark modestly added that he wasn’t alone in this process and extends his sincere thanks to fellow TCUSD staff members Gary Ledger for his honest input, Elena Li for helping to shape his words, and Kate Franceschini for her unfaltering support of his writing.

Mark Howard began teaching at Temple City High School in September, 1990, and currently teaches Algebra I and II. Previously he taught math at Monrovia High School for six years.

Mark: Congratulations on your new book! When I read the article on your achievement, I could not help but think of Mr. Frank who taught geometry to me in the 1957 - 58 school year. I just loved that subject and, no doubt, some of that attitude was caused by how Mr. Frank made the subject seem so easy and so logical. Do you know anything about Mr. Frank over the past 48 years? All the best! John Oberg Victoria, BC, Canada jcoberg@shaw.ca
