TCHS Classes and Reunions

Mar 30, 2002 -- TCHS classes starting 1957 are categorized in the Alumni Directory. Others are registered in 56/PHS or Sponsor categories. Here's the rationale on which classes we've included.

A bit of history; corrections welcome.

Temple City High School began operation in 1956 after a two-year transition of the school district. Temple City Unified School District was incorporated after an election in (1953/4?) from parts of the prior South Santa Anita Schools and Pasadena HS and JC districts, along with a few blocks carved from adjacent districts, e.g., the part of TCUSD between the SP tracks and Lower Azusa Road that was formerly part of the Rosemead district and the area north of Duarte Road that was formerly part of Pasadena schools. The new district assumed the management of TCJHS (now Oak Avenue Intermediate School).

There has never been any relationship in boundaries between the school district and the City of Temple City incorporated about 1960.

During the transition, students already "in the queue" continued attending Pasadena High School through the class of 1956. A couple of classes had the option of continuing to attend PHS, which then shared the current campus of Pasadena City College.

The first class that "officially" graduated from TCHS was the Class of 1957. The first class to attend TCHS for four years on the Lemon Avenue campus (including about six weeks of walking back and forth to Oak Avenue between classes in September and October of 1956) was the Class of 1960.

We've noticed that many people are registered on other alumni sites as TC alumni before 1957. We welcome them as members. We've made provision for the classes of "56/PHS" in the directory. We ask others to put themselves into the class 1956-PHS other, regardless of year, adding their class year to their surname. If at least 20 people in an older PHS class request the change, we'll add earlier years and mark them with a "PHS flag."

The Forums is a good place to add notes and comments, but if you are a definitive source on pre-56 history, write to the editor.

Were you the Tom who was my boss at CalTec a lot of years ago. Those machines were huge and you were extremely smart if I remember correctly. This was in the mid-1970's. Time passes.

I was reading about how TCHS was started. Please don't forget about all of us that came from Rosemead schools in 1953-54. Their were quite a few of us.
