From The Editor

Once in a lifetime!

Over 190 musicians plus auxiliaries. The TCHS Pride of Temple City band will appear in the Rose Parade for the first time ever. They're the only California band in the RP this year.

(Regular news list appears below.)

I'd like to get a video of the parade on 1/1/04 for the Alumni Magazine, but I don't have the technology. I use use ordinary broadcast TV and my local signal is undependable. (I use all my telecommunications energy swearing at Verizon - or whatever they've renamed themselves this week.)

If you can, please record the parade from cable. I'll then use the recording to make a digital excerpt for the TCHS alumni site. (We'll ask permission of the sources before publishing, of course, so take note of which station you're recording. We have a right to limited use under the "Fair Use Doctrine" of the US Supreme Court for purposes of journalistic review.)

Of course, if you're planning to attend in person, please take your video camera - or rent one for the occasion.

Videotape would be good; digital video would be a godsend.

Official order of march per Pasadena Star News has the band at #92: "92. The Temple City High School Band and Pageantry Corps -- This is the first parade for the 216-member group. Over the past three years the program has earned 21 first-place or sweepstakes awards. "

That means they'll depart Orange Grove Ave around 9:30 AM Pacific time -- or so, but this is not a close estimate. The preceding elements are listed below for heads-up purposes.

It's usually possible to get at least two views as any given element of the parade passes different stations' cameras. The Rose Parade will be broadcast on ABC, NBC, CBS, Univision, HGTV, Telemundo, Travel Channel, Discovery HD and KTLA in the Los Angeles area, and elsewhere local stations pick up one of those feeds. KTLA (5 in LA) is always at the corner of OG and Colo. Blvd., so they'll have an early view.

If you are able to tape the band's passage, please let me know, and I'll arrange to collect videos. Use your eyes; if it looks terrible, don't send it. Please don't send without contacting me first for instructions.

Thanks, Rees

86. Float: Harmony of the Pacific (Northern Mariana Islands)

89. Band: Los Angeles Unified School District Honor Band
90. Equestrians: Spirit of the West Riders
91. Float: The Banyan Tree Jugband (Downey Rose Float Association)
92. Pride of Temple City Band

NEW WEATHER FEATURE. We've added a Temple City weather report to the magazine. See a summary of moisture and temperature (rainbow) above right. Click it for a comprehensive weather report of TC and the San Gabriel Valley. Suggested by an alumnus; we welcome your ideas for new features. The information is provided by Weather Underground. (However, repeated observations lead us to believe this is actually the weather above ground.) --Ed.

Has your email address changed? A recent mailing to alumni revealed that about five percent of our address list is obsolete. If your address has changed, please send your new address to the editor, using the Send News link in the Table of Contents. (Our member-editing form is undergoing a revision, and we don't want to lose you.) --Ed.)
